Convert GIF to MP4

Animated GIFs are bulky and plenty of platforms will not take them as uploads. Converting to MP4 gives you a video that is usually far smaller, plays smoothly and posts anywhere video is accepted, all done in your browser.

How to use the GIF to MP4 converter

  1. Add one animated GIF or a batch of them.
  2. Leave Quality on High for pixel art, interface captures and text; Balanced or Small file trims more for photographic GIFs.
  3. Convert to MP4 and download the clips or a ZIP.

Where the savings come from

A GIF stores each frame with a 256-colour palette and simple LZW compression, with little reuse of earlier frames. H.264 predicts motion and spends data only where the picture changes, so a GIF of a few megabytes often shrinks 5–20 times; in testing, a short 90 KB GIF became a 13 KB MP4.

That is also why many big sites quietly turn uploaded GIFs into video behind the scenes.

What the MP4 looks like

The output is H.264 using 4:2:0 colour sampling, a combination all phones and browsers handle. That format needs even dimensions, so an animation whose width or height is odd loses one pixel row or column. The MP4 has no sound and keeps the original frame timing.

A GIF loops on its own; an MP4 plays once unless the player repeats it. Social feeds loop short clips automatically, and on a web page the loop attribute on the video tag does the same.

Speed

GIFs are small in pixel terms, so once the engine is loaded most reaction GIFs are done in well under a second. Animations running to thousands of frames need a few seconds.

The encode uses x264’s veryfast preset, which suits flat, low-colour animation well.

Questions

What happens to transparency?

MP4 cannot store it, so transparent areas come out black.

Do colours shift?

Slightly. H.264 keeps colour at half resolution, so one-pixel coloured details in pixel art may soften slightly.

Can I convert a folder of GIFs?

Yes. Add them all at once and take the MP4s as a single ZIP when the queue finishes.

Will Instagram or TikTok take the MP4?

They accept MP4 video, which is the usual reason people convert GIFs. Short clips are looped by the feed automatically.
