Convert WebM to MP3

Screen recorders, online voice recorders and meeting tools that run in Chrome or Firefox tend to save WebM. Podcast hosts, transcription services and older editors usually want MP3. This page bridges the two, for WebM video and audio-only WebM alike.

How to use the WEBM to MP3 converter

  1. Add the WebM recordings.
  2. Pick a bitrate: 128 kbps covers voice, while music recorded from a browser tab deserves 192 kbps.
  3. Convert and save the MP3s.

From Opus or Vorbis

Recent WebM files carry Opus audio and older ones Vorbis. Both are efficient, so an Opus track at 128 kbps already sounds very good; an MP3 at 160 or 192 kbps holds on to that quality and plays almost anywhere.

Because Opus works at 48 kHz internally, the MP3 normally comes out at 48 kHz as well. Choose 44.1 kHz under More settings if a tool insists on it.

Sound-only WebM files

Some recorders save nothing but audio in a .webm file. Those convert like any other WebM: the sound is decoded and written as MP3.

A WebM that contains only a picture has nothing to extract, and the queue says so for that file.

Meeting and lecture recordings

Recordings of calls and lectures are mostly speech, often at modest Opus bitrates between 32 and 128 kbps. A 128 kbps MP3 captures all of that, and choosing Mono under More settings makes the file half as big again.

Audio is light work, so even an hour-long call is done in less than a minute on an ordinary laptop, and the recording never leaves your machine.

Questions

Can I keep the Opus audio as it is?

Yes. In the audio converter choose Opus and the track is copied into an .opus file without re-encoding.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in a current mobile browser. Very long recordings are easier on a computer.

Which sample rate should I pick for a podcast host?

Leaving it at the original is fine for most hosts. If one asks for 44.1 kHz, set that under More settings before converting.

Is my meeting recording uploaded?

No. The WebM is read and the MP3 written inside your browser tab, which matters for calls that include private details.
