Convert PNG to JPG

Screen grabs, frames exported from an editor and thumbnails saved from design apps usually arrive as PNG. Converting them to JPG makes them small enough to post, attach or upload as a video thumbnail, and it happens right here in the tab.

How to use the PNG to JPG converter

  1. Select the PNG images or drag in the folder your editor exported to.
  2. Set the quality slider. Around 85 keeps photographic frames clean; 70 is plenty for a chat or forum post.
  3. Open More settings if the PNGs have transparent areas and pick the fill colour, or set a width for thumbnails.
  4. Convert, then save files one at a time or grab them all in one ZIP.

Frames and thumbnails as JPG

A still exported from a 4K timeline is 3840 × 2160 pixels, and as PNG it easily passes 10 MB because every pixel of film grain is stored exactly. The same frame as a quality 85 JPG is typically 1–2 MB and looks identical at normal viewing size.

Many platforms cap thumbnail and cover uploads at a couple of megabytes and expect JPG. Setting a width of 1280 pixels under More settings alongside the conversion gets a standard 16:9 thumbnail in one step.

Transparent PNGs

JPG cannot store transparency. Any see-through pixels are painted with the background you choose: white, black or light grey. Soft edges, such as the anti-aliased outline of a sticker or a channel logo, are blended into that colour rather than cut off hard.

For overlays and watermarks you still want to place over video, keep the PNG. A JPG version is only right when the image will sit on a known solid background.

Questions

Does the JPG lose quality?

JPG is lossy, so some fine detail is discarded. At quality 80–90 the difference is very hard to see on photos and video frames. Sharp text in screenshots shows artefacts sooner, so check those at your chosen setting.

Which encoder is used?

MozJPEG, compiled to WebAssembly. It writes progressive JPGs, which are usually a little smaller than what a browser canvas or a basic editor would save.

Can I convert hundreds of screenshots?

Yes. There is no file count limit; the files are processed by your browser a few at a time and you can download everything as one ZIP at the end.
