How to use the JPG to AVIF converter

1. Add the photos, thumbnails or PNG cut-outs to convert.
2. Choose a quality. AVIF uses a lower scale than JPG: 50–65 suits most photos.
3. Push the Effort slider in More settings higher when you have time to spare, then convert and download.

What you gain

At a look similar to a quality 85 JPG, AVIF usually needs 40–60% of the bytes and about a fifth less than WebP. Smooth areas such as skies and studio backdrops stay free of the banding JPG shows when pushed small, which suits poster frames and hero images.

PNG inputs keep their alpha channel, so a transparent product shot or logo becomes a much lighter AVIF that still sits cleanly on any background.

Speed and compatibility

Expect a few seconds per 12-megapixel photo, longer on a phone or at high effort. For a big batch, resize first under More settings; halving the dimensions roughly quarters the work.

AVIF displays in current Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and in Safari from version 16. On a website, offer a WebP or JPG fallback in a picture element for older browsers, and keep tiny screenshot text in lossless PNG or WebP where AVIF is weakest.

Thumbnails and channel art

A row of video thumbnails is a good fit for AVIF: they are photographic, often shown small, and repeated on every listing page. Converting them can cut the image weight of such pages substantially, while the originals stay on your disk for platforms that only take JPG or PNG.

Each row lists the size before and after, so you can compare AVIF against a WebP of the same picture before deciding which one to publish.
