Mute a video

Take the sound out of a clip before you add your own music, post a silent loop or hide a background conversation. The picture is written into a fresh file in the original format minus its audio, so nothing about the image changes.

How to use the Mute Video

  1. Add the clips that should be silent.
  2. Press Remove.
  3. Download the silent copies; each file name ends in “-muted”.

The picture is not touched

Muting is a stream copy handled by ffmpeg: the video track, and any subtitle track, are written into the new file exactly as they were, and only the audio tracks are dropped. A long 4K recording therefore finishes in about the time it takes to read it, with no quality change.

The file shrinks by the weight of the removed sound, roughly 1 MB per minute for a 128 kbps AAC soundtrack.

Where silent clips help

Browsers generally only autoplay muted video, so a background loop with no audio track at all saves bandwidth for nothing lost. Editors are also more predictable with a clip that has no stray sound waiting to be mixed back in under your music.

Every video format the page accepts works, from phone MOV and MP4 to AVI, WMV and FLV, and the output keeps the format you started with.

Muting part of a clip

This page removes sound from the whole file. To silence just one section, cut the clip into pieces with the trimmer first, then mute only the piece that needs it.

If you want the soundtrack on its own instead, the video to MP3 converter saves it as a separate audio file.

Questions

Are all audio tracks removed?

Yes, every audio track goes, including commentary or a second language.

Does muting re-encode the video?

No. The picture is copied as it is, which is why it is quick and lossless.

Why is the muted file smaller?

The audio data is gone, so the file loses exactly that weight. The video part is byte-for-byte the same as before.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. The stream copy runs in ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser, so private footage stays on your device.
