Crop image

Fit a photo to a widescreen thumbnail, a vertical story or a square post, or cut the same area out of a pile of screenshots. You set the crop with numbers rather than a mouse, and it applies to every picture in the queue.

How to use the Crop Image

  1. Add the pictures to crop.
  2. Pick Crop by: aspect ratio, pixel box, or auto-trim of plain borders.
  3. Choose the ratio and which part to keep, enter the box position and size, or set the trim tolerance and margin.
  4. Crop, then save the results one by one or as a ZIP.

Ratios for screens and feeds

Landscape choices are 16:9, 21:9, 4:3 and 3:2; portrait ones are 9:16, 4:5, 3:4 and 2:3; and there is square 1:1. For each picture the largest area of that shape is cut out with no scaling, so a phone photo becomes a 16:9 thumbnail or a 9:16 vertical clip cover at full resolution.

Keep decides which part survives. Centre suits most shots; Top / left edge protects a face near the top of a portrait, and Bottom / right edge keeps the opposite side.

Pixel box and auto-trim

Pixel box asks for how far from the left and top edges to start, then how wide and tall the area should be. When the box runs past an edge it is clipped to the picture, and a box that starts outside the picture gives an error, which makes it reliable for cutting the same toolbar or player area from a series of screen captures.

Auto-trim compares the edges with the very first pixel in the top-left corner and strips rows and columns that match it within the tolerance. It tidies scans with white margins, captures with flat borders and PNG cut-outs with empty transparent space; the margin setting leaves a little room around what remains.

Questions

Which ratio for a YouTube thumbnail or a Reel cover?

16:9 for a widescreen thumbnail, 9:16 for vertical covers such as Reels, Shorts and stories, 1:1 or 4:5 for feed posts.

Can I drag a crop rectangle?

No. Cropping here works from numbers, which is what lets one crop apply to a whole batch.

Is a cropped JPG re-encoded?

Yes. The default is 90 and More settings lets you change it. At that level the change is not visible in normal use.
