Convert PNG to ICO

Turn a channel logo or app mark into an .ico file for a desktop shortcut, a program or a website tab. One ICO can carry several sizes, from 16 up to 256 pixels square, and the transparent background of your PNG is kept.

How to use the PNG to ICO converter

  1. Add your logo as PNG, WebP, AVIF or SVG, ideally 512 pixels or larger.
  2. Choose the sizes: the favicon set of 16, 32 and 48, the full set up to 256, or a single size.
  3. Pick how non-square images are handled: padded with transparency or cropped to fill.
  4. Convert and download the .ico file.

Why several sizes in one file

Windows uses a different size depending on where the icon appears: tiny in title bars, medium on the desktop, large in big-icon views. When the ICO already holds each size, nothing has to be stretched on the fly and the icon stays sharp.

Every icon size is produced separately from the source, stepping down by halves, so the 16-pixel version keeps as much definition as such a tiny square allows.

Inside the ICO

Sizes up to 64 pixels are stored as 32-bit bitmaps with an alpha channel, the form every Windows version and browser can read. The 128 and 256-pixel entries are stored as PNG inside the icon, which is what newer Windows expects at large sizes.

An SVG logo is drawn at 1024 pixels before the sizes are cut, so every entry starts from a crisp image.

Designing for small squares

A detailed logo with thin type looks fine at 256 pixels and falls apart at 16. If your brand has a simple mark or a single initial, use that for the icon rather than the full wordmark.

A small source has the opposite problem: it turns soft when stretched to fill the 256-pixel slot. Start from the largest version of the artwork you have.

Questions

What if my logo is not square?

The default pads it evenly with transparent space. Choose the fill option to crop the edges instead.

Can this ICO be a website favicon?

Yes. Pick the 16, 32, 48 set and save it as favicon.ico in the site root. The favicon generator also builds the PNG and Apple icons.
