Convert SVG to PNG

Most video editors, streaming tools and slideshow apps will not place an SVG on a timeline, but they all take a PNG with a transparent background. Type the width you need and every vector file is drawn at that size by your browser, ready to drop over footage.

How to use the SVG to PNG converter

  1. Add one SVG or a whole folder of icons and logos.
  2. Enter the output width in pixels, anything from 16 to 8192. Height is worked out from the drawing’s own proportions.
  3. Convert, then download the PNGs separately or zipped together.

Sizes that suit video work

A channel watermark sitting in the corner of a 1080p frame rarely needs more than 300 to 400 pixels across, while a full-screen title card for a 4K project wants 3840. Because the vector is redrawn for each export rather than stretched, a large PNG is as crisp as a small one.

Need the same logo in several sizes for different platforms? Run the batch once per width. Each pass reads the SVG fresh, so nothing is upscaled from an earlier, smaller render.

Things the renderer cannot see

Only what is inside the file gets drawn. Pictures that the SVG links to on another server are skipped for security, and lettering set in a typeface your computer lacks is shown in a fallback font. Embedded images, gradients, masks and inline styles come through as expected.

If an SVG has no width or height attributes, its viewBox sets the shape. A file with neither is treated as 300 by 150, the size browsers assume for undimensioned graphics.

Memory and very large exports

Every pixel of the PNG has to be held in memory while it is drawn and compressed. An 8192-pixel-wide render of a wide banner is a lot of pixels, and phones with little RAM may give up where a laptop copes easily.

For on-screen use, the width you will actually display is almost always enough. Go bigger only for print or for footage you plan to zoom into.

Questions

Will the PNG have a see-through background?

Yes, wherever the SVG draws nothing. If the artwork includes its own background rectangle, that rectangle is drawn too.

Are the PNG files optimised?

They are passed through OxiPNG after rendering, and simple flat icons usually end up stored as a compact palette image.

Why does my text look like a different font?

The font is not available on your device. Convert the lettering to outlines in your design app before exporting the SVG.
