Flip image

Front cameras often save selfies the way you saw yourself on screen, mirrored, so text on a shirt or a sign reads backwards. Flip them here to show the scene as everyone else sees it, or turn pictures upside down, one at a time or in a batch.

How to use the Flip Image

  1. Add the pictures.
  2. Choose Horizontal to mirror left and right, or Vertical to turn them upside down.
  3. Keep the same format or pick another under Save as.
  4. Flip and save the results.

Mirror versus turn

A horizontal flip swaps the left and right sides, so writing in the picture reads backwards. A vertical flip mirrors top to bottom instead; it equals a horizontal flip combined with a half turn.

If you only want a picture upside down with readable text, that is a 180° rotation, which lives in the rotate tool.

Format and quality

PNG, WebP and AVIF pictures keep their transparency. JPG results are saved again at quality 90 by default (adjustable under More settings), a level at which the flip looks lossless.

HEIC photos come out as JPG by default, since a browser can read HEIC yet has no way to save it. Pick PNG in the Save as menu for a lossless copy.

Batches for print and layout

Heat-transfer and iron-on designs must be printed mirrored to read correctly once applied. Add the whole set, choose Horizontal, and each design is reversed in one go.

For catalogue or thumbnail layouts where every subject should face the same direction, flipping a few shots works well; check first that no logo or lettering on them will end up backwards.

Questions

Why does my selfie look wrong after flipping?

You are used to the mirrored view from the front camera. The flipped version is how other people see you, which often feels odd at first.

Can I flip both directions at once?

Doing both equals a 180° turn, so use the rotate tool for that.

Does flipping change the picture size?

No. Width and height stay exactly as they were; only the direction of the content changes.

Are GIF files supported?

No. Animated GIFs would lose their motion, so GIF and ICO are not accepted here.
